Edward Griffith was born in Bath, Somersetshire, England on 13 February 1819. He arrived in Australia on the Nile in 1854 with is wife Mary and their five children. That same year he travelled to Ipswich to found a Congregational Church for the Colonial Missionary Society. His son Samuel Walker Griffith was Premier of Queensland from November 1883 to June 1888. Rev. Edward Griffith died at New Farm, Brisbane in 1891 and is buried in Toowong cemetery.
