Queensland State Archives in partnership with the Harry Gentle Resource Centre are pleased to announce the first talk of 2024, an exploration into the life of Hannah Rigby, a woman whose story is both compelling and largely undocumented.

Presented by Jane Smith, Visiting Fellow at the HGRC, this talk promises to shed light on the remarkable journey of a woman who defied the odds of her time.

Hannah Rigby was not your typical convict. A seamstress, a thief, an “exemplary” servant, and a single mother fighting to keep her family together, her story resounds with struggles against poverty and gender inequality.

In this talk, Jane will delve into previously unknown aspects of Hannah’s life, from her early days in Liverpool to her trials and tribulations in Australia.

Discover the untold details of Hannah’s crimes, her relationships, and the challenges she faced as a woman navigating the harsh realities of colonial life.
