PhD candidate Jan Richardson’s article, ‘Other black peoples: rethinking race and settler colonialism in Australia’s northern tropic’, has been published online as an open access article in the Settler Colonial Studies journal. It features biographical research on non-European convicts and their interactions with First Peoples at Moreton Bay. Seven case studies focus on Sheik Brown from India, George Brown from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Eugene Doucette and Jean Celestine from Mauritius, Benedict Vengeur – born in Madagascar but transported from Mauritius, and Hendrick Witnalder and Steerman Jantjies – Khoisan (‘Hottentot’) men from the Cape Colony (now part of South Africa).
