Jemima Cooke was born in Launceston, Tasmania on 7 November 1837 and baptised on 29 November. She married Frederick Crowther in Launceston on 5 July 1859. After the death of her father, Jemima moved to Queensland in the early 1860s with her mother and siblings. She married her second husband, John Allen, in Queensland on 14 May 1865 under the name Jemima Crowther.
