Online biographies of significant and representative persons in Australian history, hosted by the National Centre of Biography at ANU. Concise, informative, well-researched and authoritative biographies that you can search by name or any other keyword, or browse.

The Australian Frontier Conflicts 1788-1940s seeks to document conflicts between European colonists and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The site includes an Australian map and timeline of known locations of conflict that can be searched by Australian States and Territories. Additionally, links to journal articles, memorials and news items are provided.

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies is a research, collections and publishing organisation. They hold a priceless collection, including films, photographs, video and audio recordings as well as the world’s largest collection of printed and other resource materials for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. Search all the collections through simple or advanced search functions, or search audiovisual archives, library collections and family history resources.

The National Foundation for Australian Women established the Australian Women’s Archives Project in 2000 to build knowledge and recognition of the contribution made by women to Australia. You can use the Register to search for women, organisations, archives, publications and digital resources. Another option is to browse the site and explore by themes or exhibitions.

The Braided Channels research collection includes materials collected on Australia women, land and history in the Channel country. The collection is constructed from some 70 hours of oral history interviews with women from Australia’s Channel Country, together with archival film, transcripts, photos and music. University of Newcastle  historian, Professor Lyndall Ryan and her team of researchers, have created an online tool that records massacre site locations, details of the individual massacres and for the first time in the world, the sources corroborating evidence of the massacres.

The Digital Panopticon is a collaboration between the Universities of Liverpool, Sheffield, Tasmania, Oxford and Sussex, with funding from the AHRC. Led by an international team of established researchers, it will use digital technologies to bring together existing and new genealogical, biometric and criminal justice datasets held by different organisations in the UK and Australia. The website allows you to search millions of records from around fifty datasets, relating to the lives of 90,000 convicts from the Old Bailey. Use the site to search individual convict life archives, explore and visualise data, and to learn more about crime and criminal justice in the past.

UQ eSpace is the single authoritative source for the research outputs of the staff and students of the University of Queensland and is the archival home of UQ Research Higher Degree digital theses. It operates as an institutional repository for open access publications, research datasets and other digitised materials created by staff of the University such as print materials, photographs, audio materials, videos, manuscripts and other original works. There is a quick search or advance search function.

This website is designed to provide information about accessing the resources of the State Library of Queensland’s Family History services. Additionally, it provides links to external e-resources and internet sites that will assist with your family history research.

From 1803 to 1853, 13,500 female convicts were transported to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), as punishment for crimes, mainly theft. After serving their sentences they were released into the community. Their transportation left a lasting legacy. The Female Convicts Research Centre promotes interest in the female convicts of Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), by encouraging and facilitation research, mainly through its database, website and seminars. This website contains information that is relevant to anyone who experienced out-of-home ‘care’ in Australia, not only the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants, but also members of the Stolen Generations, foster children, wards of the state and adopted children. This website can help you locate and get access to your own personal records which may be kept by government departments or past providers of ‘care’. The web resource allows for a quick search for Home, orphanage, organisation or suburb, or you can browse all entries by State/Territory. There are no Queensland entries prior to 1865.

The Genealogical Society of Queensland (GSQ) specialises in Queensland Family History. Financial members can access an online portal of resources for family history research. Members are entitled to free use of the library. Visitors may use the library on payment of a day visit fee of $20 which is refundable if you choose to join the GSQ. You can perform a keyword search of the GSQ book, CD, microfiche and microfilm collections.

This keyword-searchable Griffith University website produced by Professor Regina Ganter contains entries on all German denominational missions in Australia and on their German-speaking staff. Much of the material is from mission archives not previously used by Australian historians. It has six website entries pertaining to pre-Separation Queensland: Zion Hill mission (1838-1848), Pastor Johann Hausmann, the Catholic mission at Stradbroke Island (1843-1847), and Fr. Joseph Snell. It also has an entry on the activities of immigration promoter J. D. Lang in connection with Zion Hill mission, and comments on the Yugambeh diplomat Bilin Bilin aka Bilinba (under Frontier Relations on the Logan River).

The John Oxley Library consists of unique Queensland resources including diaries, manuscripts, artworks, photographs, original maps and plans, and oral histories. A broad range of books, magazines, newspapers, and ephemera are acquired largely through legal deposit and websites are archived in Pandora. These materials as well as films and digital stories are available for viewing in the John Oxley Library Reading Room or online via the catalogue.

Mapping Brisbane History is an online interactive history map of Brisbane from the early 19th century to the late 20th century. It is an evolving research tool that presents the history of Brisbane in the spatial dimension, revealing local networks and the interconnection of sites. The strength of the Mapping Brisbane History website is that it has been created from wide community interaction, with local history organisations contributing their knowledge to the project.

The Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying website contains a digital collection of Queensland historical map, plans, plans, photographs, documents and artefacts. Some of the collection relates to the period prior to 1859.

The National Archives of Australia collects Australian Government records, preserves them, manages them and makes them public in accordance with the Archives Act, 1983. You can access these records for professional research or personal interest, and you can do this online or through the research centres and exhibitions.

Obituaries Australia is a digital repository of obituaries published in newspapers, journals, magazines and bulletins. It contains life stories of Australians from the earliest times to the present. There is a quick search by name or the advanced search functions offers the ability to search by occupation, life dates, birthplace, religion, ethnicity, author and source.

This guide outlines Family History resources related to the Pacific, held at the New Zealand National Library. There are more general resources at the top followed by individual sections for each island.

Pugh’s Almanac contains Brisbane and country town directories which list the names and professions of many people in Queensland. It also includes an almanac section giving information on weather, events, history of the colony and the government. A text search may be undertaken by clicking ctrl+1.

The Queensland Family History Society helps people trace their family history in Queensland and throughout the world. The Society has as vast range of family history resources held in the Library and Resource Centre. Access to the facilities and all the holdings of the Library and Resource Centre is free of charge for all financial members. Non-members may use the library but there is a charge of $8.50 per hour or $17 per day to allow access to all the collections.

The Queensland Heritage Register is a list of places that have cultural heritage significance to the people of Queensland. Places entered in the Queensland Heritage Register reflect the pattern of Queensland’s history and regional development. A search of the register provides information about those places entered in the register including their heritage significance and values, history, description and location. You can search using a range of different criteria including type of place (e.g. church), town/suburb (e.g. Brisbane), design period (early 20th century) or style (e.g. art deco).

The Queensland Historical Atlas utilises hundreds of maps from Queensland and Australia’s history to anchor themed stories, and to examine the importance of spatial resources in the Queensland landscape. There is a keyword search function or an advanced search within specified categories.

This website documents religious buildings in Queensland from the 1840s to 2020. The aim is to record buildings of all faiths erected for worship or as a sacred space. The intention is to record all buildings – existing, closed, demolished or used for other purposes. The data includes location, name/s, address, status, date of construction, other date (demolished, closed), keywords including building materials and style. The intention is to provide an image with each building.

The Queensland State Archives’ archival collection comprises millions of public records dating back to the early Moreton Bay penal settlement of 1823. A number of items from the collection have been digitised, including Indexes related to convicts, courts, hospitals, immigration, Indigenous, land purchases and leases, orphanages and reformatories. The way to find the records held in the collection is by using the online catalogue, ArchivesSearch. You can undertake a basic or advanced search for records and there is also an option to search for digitised images.

This Queensland Timeline pre-1600s-1859 commences with the Indigenous habitation of the territory that is now known as the State of Queensland and ends in 1859 when Queensland separated from New South Wales. It outlines significant events of exploration, settlement, development, conflict and disaster during this period.

The Prosecution Project investigates the history of the criminal trial in Australia. It is in the process of digitising the records of Supreme Court cases that are available in most jurisdictions. These record the names of accused as well as their offences and the outcomes of the trials. The database is searchable via the keyword function or the advance search, which allows a search for name, offence, year and jurisdiction.

Trove consists of a searchable database of almost 500 million Australian and online resources such as books, images, historic newspapers, maps, music, archives and much more. A keyword search undertaken from the home page will produce results from all online resources contained in the database. A search of digitised newspapers is available via a keyword search or an advanced search. Results may be refined by State, decade, year and month. You can also browse articles by titles, place, date, category and tag.

The Yugambeh Museum, Heritage and Research Centre was established to collect evidence of the language, history and culture of the traditional Aborigines of the Yugambeh language region. The Museum’s documentary collection includes ethnographies, certificates of births, deaths and marriages, family records, church, school and cemetery records and photographs.

The number of online resources with material relating to Queensland history is astonishing and has revolutionised the research task. Historian Thom Blake created this website as an attempt to document the extent of sites relating to Queensland history. The focus is on primary sources and not so much on contemporary works or materials.
