On Friday 19 July 2019, Griffith University Ph D candidate Roger Ford will discuss the fascinating story of a unique record from the convict era of Moreton Bay held at Queensland State Archives – Superintendent Spicer’s workbook.
As superintendent of works in the administration of the notorious commandant Captain Patrick Logan, Peter Spicer meticulously logged the details of the Moreton Bay convict workforce between 1828 and 1829. His workbook reveals a strictly controlled, hierarchical society facing the challenges of rapid population growth, drought and disease, and the stark realities of the corporal punishment regime of the period.
