Sigma is the pen-name adopted by Henry James Symes, a colourful character who first came to Queensland in the early 1850s. Christened Henry James Hyde, Sigma adopted the surname Symes when he jumped ship in Melbourne around 1850 and shortly after made his way to the Darling Downs region droving cattle. His occupations included, farmer, mail carrier, pound keeper, journalist and writer. As Sigma, Henry publish a large number of poems on a diverse range of topics in the Toowoomba Chronicle between 1892 and 1907. Read more about Henry James Symes here.
